THE LIGHTHOUSE IN LOLETA
The Lighthouse in Loleta is a television documentary filmed in 1972 at the Gospel Outreach of Humboldt County's commune at a former U.S. Coast Guard lighthouse station located on Table Bluff in Humboldt County, California.
The Ranch was the home of various of the founders of Verbo Christian Ministries. The video depicts the initial mindset of the young Jesus People counterculture that formed the Love Lift Team that left California for Guatemala after a devastating 1976 earthquake leveled great swaths of that Central American nation and killed over 30 thousand people.
The team, soon joined by several Guatemalan youths, lived in a community at the Granja Dos Alicias on the outskirts of Guatemala City while working on reconstruction projects and developing the groundwork for what was to become Verbo Ministries, a global outreach with churches, schools and social projects in 13 nations.
The video demonstrates that the group's basic message was worldwide evangelism, uncompromising discipleship and practical unity. It also underscores the fact that biblically trained young people are quite capable of doing international missionary work like church planting and social works.
Thanks to Dick Funnell, member of the original Love Lift Team and (with his Guatemalan wife, Gladys) part of the founding group of Verbo Ministries, for translation and subtitles. The Funnells have an intercessory ministry in Wales, http://www.walesawakening.org/
